Spongebob Hex Toddler Blanket

My great-niece recently told me that her toddler son keeps wanting to snatch the blanket that I crocheted for his baby sister a few months ago, so I think it's time I make one for him.  They're going to decorate his room ala Spongebob, so I searched for photos of what colors would look best.

I couldn't come up with a blue that I was satisfied looked like Spongebob, but I had a skein of Red Heart Aruba Sea on hand so went with that, bright yellow and white.  Spongebob lives in the sea, right?  I debated on whether to add a bit of brown (Spongebob's Square Pants are brown, I believe), but you can see the one small strip in the photo so far.  Kind of an odd color to throw in with the others, but it does break it up a bit. I don't know if I'll keep it or not, but we'll see how it goes.

I actually started doing a more star-shaped hexagon that I like, but no matter how I adjusted, the piece buckled more with each round.  I frogged and started again at least three times, trying different things, and finally gave up and went with the traditional hex.

So this is where I'm at after a full day of fits and starts.

After you get done the first round, this is such an easy pattern and I don't know why I haven't made a lot more of them.  I did bring one to the VA hospital last week that should work for a lapghan or someone in a wheelchair.

So ... what're you up to this week?

To play along on Work-in-Progress Wednesday, make your blog post for Wednesday be about something you're working on - some type of craft, renovation project, landscaping, even that novel you're writing. You can play along even if it’s not Wednesday; I leave each WIP up until the following week. Copy the code below Rosie's picture and paste it into your blog post so that others can follow too, and see the rest of the projects that are posted here.

  1. I really like the colors you picked out. I don't think the brown looks bad at all. Just a bit to give it some contrast and a break between the colors. It looks pretty good to me!
I know what you mean about the star shape buckling. I've always had problems with that too. Guess that's why I just don't make them :)
Keep up the good work, looks great to me!

  2. I think the colors are great, Marie Anne, and very 'Sponge Bob'. My son would love one. In fact, I may have to make him one.

Hey, Marie Anne, do you have the pattern for that flapper hat for sale somewhere?

  3. Love the pattern and the colors. I think the brown is a nice break up of lighter colors.

  4. I like the way it turned out too. I think it is very Sponge Bob'ish. I am just now between projects but expect that to end in a couple of hours after I pick out my next project. Have a great Wednesday!

  7. I agree that the brown gives it a nice touch. Leave it in!

And I also have a bit of ruffling in the center of my star blankets but it doesn't make the entire blanket that way and I just leave it. I've made about 10 and given them away and they are a favorite with nursing moms because it covers them and the baby. :)
