Latest WIP is a Scarf for ME!

Like most of you who crochet, I've been busy making things to sell and gift to others, but rarely take the time to make something for myself.  I changed that up a bit this last week.

I hate to wear a coat while driving as I feel too confined.  I'll keep a coat and hat in the back seat for emergencies, but normally just wear a heavy sweater or sweatshirt over a turtleneck and call it good.  I dug out an old scarf and wrap that around my neck until the car is all toasty, and usually that's enough to get me  from house to car to store and back.

Since it takes so little time (and yarn) to whip up a scarf, I decided I  may as well be as fashionable as I can and wear a scarf that somewhat matches my outfit (if you can call jeans and oversized sweatshirt an outfit).  I wear this boxy gold and dark brown animal print top quite a bit and figured that would be easy to match, so my last trip to town I grabbed a skein of Red Heart variegated yarn called 'Platoon' and thought it would be a good fit.

How appropriate.  It's various shades of beige and brown that will become a camo pattern, and I'm a retired Marine, so the name 'Platoon' definitely fits.  (Next week's WIP post will probably be about another scarf to match the sweater I was wearing today.  Yea, I couldn't resist 'just looking' down the yarn aisle when I was at WalMart).

Here's the top ...

Here's the scarf so far ...

And here they are together.

Whatdya think?

I'm not too keen on how the scarf looks almost like diamonds in some spots and then more striped in others.  I don't know if ripping out part of it to cut a small section of yarn would make a difference or not.  I don't have much  left, so I'll probably finish it up and see what the final product looks like before deciding. The pattern I used is a simple woven-like stitch that works up very quickly.  You can see the pattern here.

Oh, I made a hat too, and love it!  Will share pics of that in a future blog post.

To play along on Work-in-Progress Wednesday, make your blog post for Wednesday be about something you're working on - some type of craft, renovation project, landscaping, even that novel you're writing. You can play along even if it’s not Wednesday; I leave each WIP up until the following week. Copy the code below Rosie's picture and paste it into your blog post so that others can follow too, and see the rest of the projects that are posted here.

  1. I've noticed that with some of the variegated yarns, the end result isn't what I expected, but with scarves, you can wrap them in such a way that the actual pattern looks different because of the way the scarf is wrapped. I think it looks nice, by the way.

  2. I think it looks very nice. I think when you wrap it around either the stripes will show or the diamonds. I think it is pretty cool how it just made that pattern. :) Looks like it matches very well too!

  7. Love the scarf!

It bugs me, too, when variegated yarns create a pattern--especially when it doesn't stay consistent. But I usually chalk that up to my own human error. ;-)
